2010 Entertainment Schedule
"Now we’re born again," sings Zach Rogue on the closing track of Rogue Wave’s fourth studio album, Permalight.
The dreamy acoustic lament lasts just over a minute but in sound and spirit it neatly sums up everything that comes before it. A punchy, deceptively effervescent set of multi-instrumental pop tunes, the Northern California band’s latest set represents a giant breakthrough for Rogue and his longtime musical partner, drummer-keyboardist-vocalist Pat Spurgeon.
"The record sounds, for lack of a better word, fun," the frontman says.
It's an astonishing change of direction, to say the least. Formed by Rogue in 2002 after he lost his tech job and parted ways with the Oakland rock group Desoto Reds, Rogue Wave has a reputation for crafting classic, inward-looking pop songs highlighted with psychedelic guitars, pastoral sound effects and intricate rhythms.
On tunes from the new album like the title track "Permalight" and "Good Morning," however, Rogue Wave steps away from expectations. Rogue says the former was written as a left-field sequel to Kool and the Gang’s “Celebration,” with synthesizers that simultaneously sound brittle and blissful. “Stars and Stripes” builds on a deep groove before spilling over in a raging chorus. Clubby beats are prominent but the album doesn’t sit still for long. “Per Anger” is a straightforward rock tune that takes its cues from Pixies’ loud-quiet-loud dynamic.
Then there’s the album’s unofficial centerpiece, "I'll Never Leave You," a simple acoustic tune that finds Rogue coming to grips with the overwhelming emotions that come with young fatherhood. Like many of the songs on the album it’s rooted in Rogue Wave’s triumph over seemingly constant peril—including the tragic death of a former band mate and constant health issues—and the band’s undying determination to push forward.

Deer Tick
There are many reasons why Deer Tick are an excellent band. Firstly, they have great songs. War Elephant is a great album. The follow up, Born on Flag Day is just as strong. Alt-country is a curious genre, often misconstrued, misrepresented and misunderstood. Well, for me, this lot here's a contemporary blueprint. There's country (duh), punk, blues, folk, grunge and garage rock. Hell, even their choice of cover versions - Replacements, Michael Hurley, John Prine, The Sex Pistols and Chuck Berry - goes a long way to pinning down their sound. McCauley's voice is a hybrid of Kurt Cobain and Gary Louris from the Jayhawks. He can croon, he can yelp and he can shout. He's a superb lead singer, backed by a talented, if mostly acquiescent unit.

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit
Jason Isbell may still be young, but he’s packed an enormous amount of musical experience into his 28 years. Growing up in a family of musicians, he absorbed everything he heard and began channeling it into guitar at age six and piano at 12. For the past six years, Isbell was one of three frontmen for the critically acclaimed Drive-By Truckers (DBT)—and although fans may have been shocked by his leaving the band in April, once you hear his solo debut Sirens Of The Ditch (which was co-produced by Isbell and DBT’s Patterson Hood) it will only confirm that Isbell has his own unique voice. Musicians joining Isbell on the album include DBT’s Shonna Tucker (bass) and Brad Morgan (drums) with cameos from Patterson Hood, his father David Hood, Spooner Oldham, John Neff and more.

Cravin' Melon
Formed on New Years Day in 1994 as a combining of members from Doghouse and The Next Move, Cravin' Melon was born. With only a few months of gigs under their belts, they signed to Carolina producer Dick Hodgin's M-80 Management company
and embarked on a rigorous tour schedule through the Southeast that would last two years. On the strength of the band's energetic performances, Cravin' Melon sold over 20,000 copies of their indie release, "Where I Wanna Be". With word on the street about the live shows, and the band's cutting-edge presence on this "new fad" called "the internet", it wasn't long before the major labels came calling. In 1996 the band inked a deal with Mercury and in January 1997 released its debut , "Red Clay Harvest". Constant touring coupled with the major-label release more than tripled their sales base. The next two years saw them emerging as a Southern power-house, packing clubs headlining the star-rich Jim Valvano celebrity V-Jam, and pocketing the 1998 South Carolina Band of the Year Award. Previous recipients include James Brown and Hootie And The Blowfish.

Crowfield
Crowfield's journey to the national stage has been accompanied by breakups and breakdowns, tempered by successes and letdowns, and defined by the act of giving a little more when there was nothing left to give. The natural quality of the music draws from the experience of growing up in a quiet Midwestern town, while sincere and often heart wrenching lyrics express the emotion and conflict encountered along the way.
Samantha Crain
Anais Nin said, "Each contact with a human being is so rare, so precious, one should preserve it." That suggestion is the muse impelling the conception of Samantha Crain’s second LP, You (Understood), released on Ramseur Records.
It’s a follow-up to her debut releases, The Confiscation EP (2008), a "musical novella" that had critics saying of the 21-year-old Crain's literary writing style: "the Native American spirituality of N. Scott Momaday's In The Bear's House just as likely influences the songstress as the violence and destructive sexuality of the Depression-era characters in Erskine Caldwell's Tobacco Road" (Paste Magazine), as well as the Songs In The Night LP (2009), of which Rolling Stone critic Will Hermes wrote: "Her voice is gorgeously odd — all fulsome, shape-shifting vowels that do indeed billow like fog. But while her moody country rock is full of dark themes, she rarely gives in to them."

Hannah Miller
Born and raised in the deep South by two very deep Southerners, Hannah Miller learned from an early age the value of simplicity, the meaning of love, and the very great advantage of growing up without a television.
Tradition is defined as "The handing down of a belief, legend, or custom from generation to generation". The Swingin' Medallions, a 47-year Southern tradition, are a living definition of the word.
Now in her twenties, she writes deep, folksy, catchy, soul-baring music that has drawn comparisons to Over the Rhine, Brandi Carlile, Feist, and Norah Jones but remains uneasily pigeonholed, with flavors of gospel, soul, pop, and americana blending together to make a fabulous swirly, sweet sound all her own. Folks everywhere are taking notice too, as her song "Keep it Simple" was recently featured on NBC's hit show, "Mercy" and she's been asked to open shows for Landon Pigg, Patrick Davis, Katie Herzig and Langhorne Slim. She has three independent releases under her belt, 2006’s EP “Storms of Summer”; 2008’s LP “Into the Black”, produced by Grammy Award winner Mitch Dane; and summer of 2009 witnesses the release of her third project, a stripped down, acoustic EP entitled "Somewhere in Between."

Mac Arnold
Mac Arnold must have known at an early age that his music career would read like a "Who's who" of Blues/R&B Legends. His high school band "J Floyd & The Shamrocks" were often joined by none other than Macon, Georgia native, James Brown on piano.
After deciding to pursue a professional music career, he joined the Charles Miller group until 1965 when he made the move to Chicago to work with recording artist/saxophonist A. C. Reed.
In late 1966, at age 24, came the opportunity of a lifetime to join the Muddy Waters Band and help shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement of the late 60's and early 70's. Regular guests of the band included Eric Clapton, Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, and Elvin Bishop. The Muddy Waters Band (as a unit) shared the stage with the likes of Howlin' Wolfe, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, and Big Mama Thornton just to name a few. During this time, Mac played on John Lee Hooker's "live "album, Live at the Café Au Go-Go, as well as Otis Spann's classic recording "The Blues is Where It's At".
After more than a year with Muddy Waters, Mac formed the Soul Invaders which backed up many artists, including The Temptations and B. B. King. In the early 70's, he moved Los Angeles to work at ABC Television and LAFF RECORDS (Redd Foxx). This led to working on the set of Soul Train from 1971 to 1975 and then working with Bill Withers ("Lean On Me") before moving back to South Carolina in the 80s.
Mac now resides in Pelzer, SC, where at the age of ten he got his first taste of the blues when he learned to play his brother Leroy's home-made guitar. Going back to his roots. Mac is serving up a mess of Blues with his own band, "Mac Arnold & Plate Full O' Blues". The band consists of Danny Keylon on bass and vocals, Austin Brashier on guitar and vocals, Max Hightower on keyboards, harmonica, guitar, and vocals, Mike Whitt on drums, and Mac Arnold on vocals, bass and Gas Can Guitars.

Frontier Ruckus
At a young age, the courses of Matthew Milia and David Jones somehow converged within the large and vaguely defined world of Metropolitan Detroit. And from that point on, with merely a banjo and a guitar, they moved forward towards one
common creation-something that reflected the very world from which they
came with a zeal and vividness afforded only to the young. The singular
vision of Frontier Ruckus that modernly exists, growing fuller each day,
is eternally rattling with a youthfulness impossible to shed. Unblinking
and ferocious in its expression, it spits out with every gasp dusky
images of a landscape to which it is inextricably bound. And now,
infinitely bolstered by the horns and singing-saw of Zachary Nichols,
and the percussion of Ryan Etzcorn, Frontier Ruckus is perched in waiting,
prepared to bring to the greater world a new, hollering, unyielding
poetry-the voice of memory, desperate and beautiful; the very face of
a confused and dissolving locality that one can remember as home.

The overall air of their creation breathes a sense of celebration and salvation; of a raucous party where everyone's welcome and where even the most stoic will find their toes tapping and a smile breaking free. It's as if, in the same spirit as the blues greats that traveled the highways of the American psyche before them, theirs is not music to lament life's hardships but rather to celebrate in life itself; with all its hodgepodge of pleasure and pain.

Kingslyn is hoping to pick right up where Marry a Thief left off, engaging local fans and becoming an Internet buzz word in the southeast. Kingslyn starts the project in it's home town of Columbia on August 29th and will hopefully piggy back off the success of Marry a Thief into regional and national markets. With a sound that's a lot closer to Counting Crows, and newer outfits like Augustana than the pop sound that was Marry a Thief, Kingslyn hopes to get back to Erich's more pure roots of singing and songwriting. Kingslyn is as loud as it is passionate and as rambunctious as it is heartfelt. Per usual whiskey and frustrating women fuel the fire that is Erich's extremely personal songwriting, and Kingslyn is the new vehicle he has chosen to get you there.

Following high school, a four year stint in the Coast Guard on the high seas of the North Atlantic gave John the life experiences that inspired him to begin writing songs of relative substance. After having his fill of harsh Maine winters, he moved to Wilmington, NC where he began to develop as a performer and songwriter with the bluegrass/punk/folk trio titled Woodwork Roadshow. With Woodwork, John was afforded the opportunity to open shows for acts such as Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn, Leann Rimes, Nickel Creek, Robert Earl Keen, The Avett Brothers and more. These days, while attending the University of South Carolina, John has teamed up with an A-list group of musicians in Columbia, SC that includes Herbie Jeffcoat on the electrified guitar, Reggie Sullivan on the upright bass, and Jeremy Roberson on the drums. New music is being recorded presently with Grammy Award winning musician, Mark Bryan, of Hootie and the Blowfish and Jay Clifford of Jump Little Children (both of which John has been a long time fan).

The Restoration
The Restoration consists of five southern troubadours who grew up performing in orchestras, picking bluegrass and playing in rock and roll bands. United in 2008, the band have put their musical tutelage to work, channeling rock energy and indie-pop sensibilities through banjo, violin, piano, organ and layered post-rock percussion.
The Restoration cherish music history and aspire to help in its preservation by bridging contemporary songcraft with the rich, vintage offerings of classical orchestra, old-time, church hymnals, big band, jazz, Delta blues, and early country--sounds that are too often overlooked and ignored by modern listeners. Beyond preserving musical roots, The Restoration have attempted to capture the multifaceted South as they experienced it--the real South, for better and worse.

Jesse Isley
The music of Jesse Isley is honest. Every song is derived from personal accounts. The intent is to be heartfelt and not to take on a formula - not to take on something fake.
The music that accompany these stories are influences of artists greater than himself. From Hendrix to Debussy, Johnny Cash to Death Cab. These and other techniques acquired while completing his degree in Music play a role in the sounds you hear come from his songs. His live shows are always exciting and evoke the mood of calm and storm in the same performance.
