From rock to country to jazz and blues, music lovers can enjoy a wide variety of free musical entertainment offered on six stages all weekend long!
2011 Entertainment Schedule
A self-described "American rock 'n roll band," Dawes represent everything pure and
true about that fundamental delineation, four talented friends making music
together, fueled by a shared belief in the power of their songs. With Nothing
Is Wrong, the Los Angeles-based band – singer/guitarist Goldsmith, his brother
Griffin on drums, keyboardist Tay Strathairn, and bassist Wylie Gelber – continue
to master their blend of singer/songwriter reflection with folk, country, and
AOR-inspired arrangements, all ringing guitars, soaring harmonies, and heartfelt
melodies. After spending much of the past two years on tour, songs like
"Coming Back To A Man" and "Time Spent In Los Angeles" have a restless,
unsettled quality evocative of life lived on the road. A collection of songs
that expertly builds upon the template laid by 2009's extraordinary debut, North
Hills, Nothing Is Wrong sees Dawes displaying staggering growth and
evolution while still manifesting their distinctive, unforgettable voice.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band
In 1977, the Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club in New Orleans began showcasing a traditional Crescent City brass band. It was a joining of two proud, but antiquated, traditions at the time: social and pleasure clubs dated back over a century to a time when black southerners could rarely afford life insurance, and the clubs would provide proper funeral arrangements. Brass bands, early predecessors of jazz as we know it, would often follow the funeral procession playing somber dirges, then once the family of the deceased was out of earshot, burst into jubilant dance tunes as casual onlookers danced in the streets. By the late '70s, few of either existed. The Dirty Dozen Social and Pleasure Club decided to assemble this group as a house band, and over the course of these early gigs, the seven-member ensemble adopted the venue's name: the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
Thirty years later, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a world famous music machine, whose name is synonymous with genre-bending romps and high-octane performances. They have revitalized the brass band in New Orleans and around the world, progressing from local parties, clubs, baseball games and festivals in their early years to touring nearly constantly in the U.S. and in over 30 other countries on five continents. The Dirty Dozen have been featured guests on albums by artists including David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Dr. John and the Black Crowes.

J Roddy Walston and the Business
Coming out of Baltimore, MD (via Cleveland, TN) the band has hit the road with such regularity that its recorded work can seem almost an afterthought. After all, rock and roll is foremost a live medium. But the artifact J Roddy Walston and The Business created is among the most collection-worthy albums of the past decade. The widely praised Hail Mega Boys (2007), although fine in its own right, can now be seen as a rough precursor to the ten tracks of lean-n-muscular, rollicking, unselfconscious celebration of the self-titled album due out in July 2010 via Fairfax Recordings/Vagrant.
The bands regular touring has turned the band into word-of-mouth favorites. See them once and you’ll tell ten friends about them. They’ve toured with label mates like The Hold Steady and Murder By Death, conquered SXSW, and criss crossed some of the country’s favorite hometown venues.
Consequently, J Roddy Walston and The Business have been able to build an audience the old fashioned way. That is, through hard work and with an overwhelmingly giving live show reputation. Just as they had no need for computers and other instant gratification devices in the studio, they have no need for unearned hype. The fact is they’ve earned every bit of praise they’ve gotten. And even though they’re too nice to admit it, they’re about to get a whole lot more.

Tift Merritt
Songstress Tift Merritt is a North Carolina native. Her father taught her guitar chords and Percy Sledge songs. With her longtime band, she has built a unique and critically acclaimed body of work of sonic short stories and poignant performances.
In her early twenties, though Tift had gigged by herself, she decided she was not very good at music and better suited for writing short stories. She and her dog Lucy started school at UNC to study creative writing. There, she met Zeke Hutchins, whose band had just taken a haitus and who had decided to become a school teacher. With his encouragement and a big box of LPs from the 70′s that they both liked, they started a band. Zeke set drums up in the kitchen of Tift’s farmhouse on the outskirts of town, and they practiced songs at her red piano. The Carbines played Chapel Hill haunts like the Cave, the Cat’s Cradle, and the front porch of the General Store in Bynum, NC. Tift also made a guest appearance on the Two Dollar Pistols with Tift Merritt EP. In 2000, Tift won Merlefest’s Chris Austin Songwriting contest, and with the help of Ryan Adams, found herself with a manager and a recording contract with Lost Highway records. The band headed to LA to record her first release, Bramble Rose, in 2002, produced by Ethan Johns. The record landed on Time Magazine’s and New Yorker’s top ten lists and was called the best debut of the year in any genre by the Associated Press. Tambourine followed in 2004. Produced by George Drakoulias, featuring Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers on guitar, Tambourine was a soul-rock throw down, Grammy-nominated for Country Album of the Year, even though it was really not a country album. It was also nominated for three Americana Music Awards. The tour opened for Elvis Costello, recorded Austin City Limits, releasing the performance as a live DVD, and made Home Is Loud, a document of the tour’s homecoming concert in Raleigh, NC. As the tour was winding down, Tift ran away to Paris looking for her mojo and, without intending to, started writing songs that would become Another Country. Another Country was released on Fantasy Records in 2008, again with George Drakoulias and her longtime band at the helm. Buckingham Solo, recorded in England, is an intimate concert behind Another Country, released on Fantasy in April 2009. Also in 2009, Tift had her first art exhibit, Other Countries, bringing the journals and pictures behind Another Country to light. Tift’s latest release, See You On The Moon, produced by Tucker Martine, is her most visceral work to date, and finds her doing what she does best more directly – and better – than she ever has.

Holy Ghost Tent Revival
Characterized as "explosively intoxicating," Greensboro, North Carolina's Holy Ghost Tent Revival cannot be pigeonholed into any popular genre. Melding brass with banjo, guitar, bass, drums and keys, this six-piece ensemble boasts an eclectic mash of instruments and styles - a musical alchemy all their own.
The air of their creation breathes a sense of celebration and salvation, of a raucous party where everyone is welcome and the most stoic find their toes tapping and a smile breaking free. In the same spirit as the blues greats that traveled the highways of the American psyche before, their music is not to lament living's hardships but rather to celebrate in life itself -- in all its pleasure and pain.

Futurebirds
In Athens, Georgia, the future can look a lot like the past. Often not too many changes down that way and Futurebirds certainly don’t mind.
Some folks think good music comes from making a whole bunch of sounds no one’s ever heard before. Some folks think that you can sit back and take her easy for a little while without trying too damn hard. Some folks think you can have a little of both. If you push yourself every once in awhile, you might wind up in the right place around the right friends and come up with something worth playing on the porch-swing over an ice-cold beer. That’s exactly Futurebirds’ situation. Surrounded by a sleepy-living music community—more earnest than you’ll find elsewhere—the band works to set things right where they belong. Provide people with an infectious melody and a refreshing song about things theyunderstand and they’ll sing with you.

Cravin’ Melon
Formed on New Years Day in 1994 as a combining of members from Doghouse and The Next Move, Cravin' Melon was born. With only a few months of gigs under their belts, they signed to Carolina producer Dick Hodgin's
M-80 Management companyand embarked on a rigorous tour schedule through the Southeast that would last two years. On the strength of the band's energetic performances, Cravin' Melon sold over 20,000 copies of their indie release, "Where I Wanna Be". With word on the street about the live shows, and the band's cutting-edge presence on this "new fad" called "the internet", it wasn't long before the major labels came calling. In 1996 the band inked a deal with Mercury and in January 1997 released its debut , "Red Clay Harvest". Constant touring coupled with the major-label release more than tripled their sales base. The next two years saw them emerging as a Southern power-house, packing clubs headlining the star-rich Jim Valvano celebrity V-Jam, and pocketing the 1998 South Carolina Band of the Year Award. Previous recipients include James Brown and Hootie And The Blowfish.

Kopecky Family Band
In the spring of 2010, it was time for the family to pack into their 15‐passenger van (which was lovingly called “The War Wagon”) and head to Austin, TX for their showcase at SXSW as one of ASCAP’s notable bands to watch.
A follow up performance at Next Big Nashville in 2010 had A & R reps scurrying to put their Blackberrys away and listen. When in the studio with Partners in Crime, Russ Long and Chris Grainger (Wilco, Sixpence None the Richer), the Kopecky clan produced The Disaster EP which was released in August 2010. The Kopeckys followed up SXSW with a mammoth CMJ 2010, where they won over NPR‘s own Bob Boilen and were invited to play at the official Paste Magazine showcase before becoming the darlings of ‘Store‐Cute’ and online retailer, Fred Flare. Straight back into the studio after CMJ, the band produced the follow up to The Disaster, the perfect compliment entitled Of Epic Proportions. The EP is comprised of digital B‐Sides & rarities,
featuring crowd favorite “Howlin’ at the Moon“, and a remix of “God & Me” that explores the band’s varied and broad scope to produce amazing and diverse sounds. Since then, the band released a limited edition split 7₺ vinyl with Seattle friends Ivan & Alyosha, and returned to Austin yet again for SXSW. The band played the infamous Paste Magazine showcase, Schubas Day Party, Next Big Nashville and performed for Austin’s KUT during the festival. And to keep themselves really busy in 2011, the band attended Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival for the first, notching up 3 amazing sets during the festival and amassing several new friends and fans along the way. And in other big 2011 news, the band signed on with one of the most respected companies in their field, Red Light Management. This relationship is sure to help the Kopecky Family Band continue in their pursuits to make great music for their fans and themselves. Look out for the debut full length record early in 2012.

Recorded at Johns Island, S.C.‘s Plowground Productions Studios, the album features Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell singing harmonies on “The Rescue”, while fellow Folly Beach favorites Dangermuffin back him on “I Know You Will.” “I wanted to find players who would come in and love the music and organically start playing,” says Burke. Benton Blount
Benton Blount knows to trust his instincts. Repeatedly through his career, he’s moved forward by walking through an open door, even if making that step defied logic at the time.
“I’ve had to stop wondering why all my dreams seem to keep coming true and moving me forward,” Blount says. “I’ve learned to trust that singing and writing songs is what I’m supposed to do, because every time I focus on my music, new opportunities suddenly present themselves.”
“I know people look at me, with my tattoos and apperance, and they don’t think I look like a country singer,” he says. “When I sing, I have a gruffness to my voice that’s different than most country singers too. But when I start to talk, you can hear that I’m as country as cornbread. And the songs, with their real-life stories and positive outlook on life, have more in common with country music than anything else. Country music is where I belong.”

cello.guitar.fusion- Montana Skies
Their name, Montana Skies, is a metaphor for musical freedom, and they continue to follow their creative instincts far beyond traditional boundaries. In concert, these award winning musicians delve into music from Pink Floyd and Rush to Vivaldi, and House
of the Rising Sun, as well as their own originals that have been featured everywhere from NPR to the Travel Channel. Montana Skies seemingly non-stop tour schedule has taken them all across the US as well as to Canada, Asia, and Russia; and their dedication to their musical vision has helped them build an enthusiastic grassroots fan base along the way. Combining elements of classical technique, jazz improv and the power and energy of rock n' roll; Jonathan's guitar wizardry and Jenn's blazing electric cello combine to create a sound that is truly remarkable. While the music defies simple categorization, it is a fusion in the truest sense of the word. It's been called everything from chamber rock to psychedelic strings. Whatever you want to call it, rest assured, this ain't your grannies chamber music.

Kayte Grace
Singer/songwriter Kayte Grace's music is an explosion of folk, blues, pop and rock, held together by warm-voiced, sing-along-able melodies and rich, resonant lyrics.
The Washington Post called Kayte a "talented musician" who "writes great pop songs with smart lyrics and a country feel" and declared the "Written On" album (featuring Kayte's 5 time Grammy Award winning cousin Victor Wooten) an "impressive debut." Only two years after first picking up a guitar, Kayte Grace has been featured not only by The Washington Post, but also by YouTube, The Augusta Chronicle, NBC and ABC news, Columbia Spectator, Ivy League Christian Observer and Washingtonian Magazine. She has over 600,000 views on her YouTube videos, has released 3 albums and has gone on 2 national tours. Her fans call her "delightful," "genreless" and "refreshing." At the heart of Kayte's music is the desire for true community - community that is felt in that moment when you can't help but sing along, and when you hear your deepest heart cry articulated back to you in the lyrics of a song, and especially in the moments spent right after the show, meeting and laughing and grabbing a bite to eat with fans and friends who came to see her perform. It's about community. And storytelling. The audiences of her live shows feel it.

kemp ridley
Formed as an idea for a band name by guitarists and childhood friends Thomas Barrineau and Trey Lewis in the ninth grade, kemp ridley sat for years in the backs of the minds of the Charleston, S.C. natives as a project to come. Shortly after arriving as freshmen at
the University of South Carolina in 2008, the two met bassist Cam Powell, an out of state student from Virginia, and began to collaborate in hopes of making kemp ridley a reality. Through mutual friends, the trio met locally successful singer-songwriter Cayla Fralick of Lexington, S.C., and spent the rest of the school year courting her as the band’s lead singer. Even with Cayla onboard by Spring 2009, the band remained fictional until the addition of Cayla’s lifelong friend Turner Shull as the group’s drummer in October 2009. Finally established as a quintet, kemp ridley meshed quickly musically. Building on Cayla’s acoustically driven songs from a full band standpoint and writing more electric original works as a group, kemp ridley have adapted to play any style or genre and are cementing themselves as a fan favorite live act. Over the past year, the band won the 2010 St. Patrick’s Day Battle of the Bands put on by the Five Points Association, earning the right to play on the main stage at the St. Pat’s in Five Points festival, and put their eponymous debut EP this past June.

The Dynamic Breakers
In early 1984 Johnny Gooch (drums), Perry Edge (Bass Guitar) and Bobby Ruppe (keyboards) decided to form a Beach band and in March of that year The Dynamic Breakers were born. Johnny Lathan, another Spartanburg native was asked to join as lead
guitar and vocals. As with the more popular Rhythm & Beach groups of the day the rhythm section knew they needed a strong horn section. Ron Miller a local Sax player was asked to find the right horns for the band. Ron sought out Russ Gaffney on Trumpet who had just graduated from Winthrop University. Mickey Connolly, a local band director joined in on Trombone. Rehearsals began in earnest and the bands first performance was at the old "Private Sides" Club on Blackstock road in Spartanburg. The combination of talents soon put The Breakers on the road and there they remained for 16 years. By the summer of 1987 trumpeter Russ Gaffney was finishing his Masters in Trumpet from UNC-Greensboro and was about to settle down to married life. As the band continued to grow, so did the travel distances from Greensboro and in the fall of 87 Russ parted ways with The Breakers. In the fall of 1987 Curt Walker & Steve Hopper joined The Breakers. Curt filled the trumpet void left by Russ and was also an accomplished vocalist and entertainer. Steve Hopper was also both a saxophonist and vocalist. In 1989 they released their first full length cassette which was rereleased as a CD in 1994. Hits like "Boogie in the Streets", "Take Out Some Insurance" and "West End Avenue" started finding their way to the airwaves. While the gigs kept on coming, the time and energy began to diminish and on December 31st, 1999 the band decided to "hang it up". While the band members started finding new hobbies the fans continued to listen, buy and request our music. In October of 2005 a reunion gig was held at Cleveland Park in Spartanburg. Russ Gaffney reunited with the band for one great night of music, dancing and fun with old friends. This reunion gig ignited a desire to play again and reform The Breakers. While in the process of putting the band back together, Trumpeter Curt Walker passed away suddenly on March 12th, 2006. Today the band is comprised of three original members, Johnny Gooch, Bobby Ruppe and Russ Gaffney. Along with new members, Toby, Donnie, Brad, Steve and Mark, The Dynamic Breakers are once again building their own identity.

Eric Weiler
There are people who play the guitar and then there is Eric Weiler. One minute Eric can conjure up the vibe of B.B. King, then morph his sound into a Clapton-esque vibe and then eerily summon the soul of Jimi Hendrix lighting up the stage every time. Some have even asked if he has gone to the crossroads and sold his soul for these abilities. This of course is not the case.
Eric Weiler is a blues influenced guitarist /singer /songwriter who was born and raised in Huntington, West Virginia. While growing up in Huntington Eric began playing guitar professionally at the age of 12 and performed with the Oakwood Beer Band, The One Eyed Cats, Overflow and The Remedy. Within a few years Eric’s talents became well known to those in the North Eastern Region of the U.S. which gave him the opportunity to share the stage with established blues musicians as well as opening for many national acts.
